About Kevin DeSantis, MD
I am a Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician, and I am a Type 1 diabetic. I graduated from medical school in 1987, and I completed my postgraduate training at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, NJ in 1990. I moved to Florida and began my practice in Emergency Medicine in 1990. I passed my initial Board Certification in 1991. I successfully passed my re-certification in 2001 and again in 2011.
I spent many years managing my illness according to the dogma set forth by the “experts” in the field. This proved difficult for me. I did not achieve the results that I was striving for. For a person with medical knowledge, the standard approach seemed flawed, but I could not find, nor did I think of a better approach until I became aware the ketogenic, low carbohydrate diet.
In the 25 years that I have been in practice, I have seen modern healthcare focus little effort on improving the underlying issues of diabetes or other chronic health problems. For too long, the profession of Medicine has focused on pursuing the symptoms of chronic diseases with drugs. My years of experience as a diabetic and a physician, taught me that the focus needs to shift away from treating the symptoms of disease towards the prevention and improvement of disease. I believe that smarter dietary and nutritional choices are crucial and can improve this basic flaw in the approach to diseases.
For me, the ketogenic diet has provided that change. I have learned how to lessen the impact of faulty blood sugar metabolism through the ketogenic diet and smarter personal habits. This is why I have chosen to devote my time and expertise to improving the diet and holistic health habits of those with diabetes and other metabolic challenges.
